Acoustic Textiles

Although new hi tech materials are elaborated for to overcome acoustic problems, they may not to be affordable for everyone. Still there are many schools, kindergartens, and sporting halls whose acoustic environment can be described as unsatisfactory. It is necessary to point that hi tech sound absorbing materials look very much the same and will not allow any original interiors design. Ordinary sound absorbing panels have even surfaces and do not promote sound diffusion, which should be regarded as very important in the treatment of musical interiors. The master class focused on working with local materials and on finding ways of usage for them, bearing in mind their acoustic and aesthetic properties. The project resulted in sound absorbing and muffling solutions for the use in gyms, kindergartens, movie theatres, sound studios, open offices, etc. Among materials used there were synthetic felt, disintegrated paper, wool, etc. There is an intention to conduct tests to determine the acoustic properties of some materials in the future.

Linda Madalik, acoustic engineer, was the consulting tutor of the project.
